The trek from May 15, Pentecost Sunday to November 20, the Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King has been packed and powerful in life at St. Peter’s. Now, we await Sunday, November 27, the first Sunday of Advent to usher in the Church New Year, and prepare for the Annual Meeting of the Parish on Sunday, December 4. Advent is an occasion for us to slow down, if only for a little while, so that we can pay attention to the One for whom we wait.
Likewise, Advent is an intentional season for the parish family to gather more, celebrate our life together, and encourage one another in ministry. In this time, I ask your prayers and thanksgivings for the ministries of outgoing Vestry members, Irma Hoffman, Des Keller, Dave Lavoie, and Nelda Leon, as well as for Vestry nominees, Carolyn Carlburg, Elsie Erneston, John Frederick, John Hurst, Maria Long, Thayer Moeller, and Cooper Morrison. (Read profiles of each nominee here.) They along with each member of the body of Christ is called to answer God’s call to serve.
In preparation for Advent, may we consider how it is that we are serving or might serve, whether we lead or follow. And in our discernment, let us pray using the words of Charles William Humphreys and never be the same. “Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that holy things have taken; and let the ears that heard your word to falsehood never waken. The tongues that sang your holy name nor purge of all deception; keep bright the eyes that saw your love and sharpen their perception. And may the feet that walked your courts be never lured to wander; but lead the faithful nourished here to journey on in splendor. Amen.”
God’s blessings as we try, Ollie+
