Weekday Morning Prayer and Tuesday Noon Eucharist. Monday–Friday, 8:00–8:30 a.m. Morning Prayer in the Chapel of the Saints is a beautiful offering for the start of the day. On Tuesdays at Noon, we offer a 30-minute celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the Chapel. All are invited and encouraged to bring guests to any and all of these weekday offerings.
Sunday Formation for Youth and Children, weekly. Journey to Adulthood (J2A) youth, ages 13–18, meet in the Youth Suite (basement level, Parish House). Sunday Formation for Adults, March 5, 9:30–10:30 a.m. The Parish Hall Forum (second floor, Parish House) will explore “Reconciliation: The Mission of the Church” led by the Reverend Ollie V. Rencher. The conversation will highlight St. Peter’s intentional commitment to reconciliation of all sorts, opportunities that all Christians have to reconcile, and information about the reconciliation aspects of the Rector’s sabbatical, which begins on March 6. Looking ahead to March 12, the Parish Hall Forum will focus on “Engaging Holy Week: Palm/Passion Sunday,” with Mr. Josiah Daniels leading the discussion. This session will explore the meaning of Palm/Passion Sunday, especially as it relates to Anglican worship.
Sunday Evenings at St. Peter’s: Evensong and Taizé. All are invited to experience alternative contemplative ways to begin the week: worship on most Sundays at 5:00 p.m. On most second and fourth Sundays, Choral Evensong and Holy Eucharist is offered. Our Witness to the World: Inspiration from the Saints. The Church has always celebrated how the Spirit of Christ has been revealed in the lives of Holy Women and Holy Men. Through the body of Christ, we are joined to them in our worship and in our daily lives. Learn about these companions on St. Peter’s website, www.st-peters.org, under the “Learning” tab, where their history can be found under “Inspiration from Saints.”
Visual Changes in Our Sacred Space during Lent. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, the 40-day covering of certain religious symbols, including images and processional crosses is part of what is called the “Lenten Array” at St. Peter’s. Medieval symbols depicted in the dossal veil, which now covers the mosaic at the altar, are a rooster (crowed after Peter’s third denial of Jesus) and what appears to be the combination of a lance (used to pierce the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross) and a reed (was placed in Jesus’ hand as a royal scepter in mockery). On either side of Jesus are two of the women who followed him from Galilee to Calvary and at the foot of the cross is the image of Jesus as Lamb of God.
Lenten Meditations 2017 Booklet. Copies are available in the lobby and entrances to the nave of the church or online by clicking here. This year’s devotional focuses on creating economic opportunities and strengthening communities, with a particular focus on empowering women. The daily readings are co-authored by a group of leaders from across the Anglican Communion, who bring a range of perspectives as they reflect on Scripture and other sources of spiritual wisdom.

Pub Theology, Thursday, March 2. Join parish clergy and friends for a relaxed time of holy conversation beyond the walls of St. Peter’s at our second such fellowship for 2017. On Thursday, March 2, 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille located at 911 East Morehead Street near the corner of McDowell and Morehead streets, the topic will be “Observing A Holy Lent: Practices and Rituals,” led by the Reverend Keith C. Lane, Assisting Priest. If you are curious about ancient and new practices to make a Holy Lent in your life, this casual, drop-in gathering is for you and a guest.
Sabbatical Send-off for The Rector, Sunday, March 5. The parish community will send off the Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector for his 3-month sabbatical made possible by a 2017 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program grant awarded to St. Peter’s. Entitled “Reconciliation, Music, and Rest for the Soul,” ours was one of 146 grants awarded to a variety of congregations throughout the nation. All are invited to attend either of the morning liturgies and the send-off fellowship opportunity during Coffee Hour before his March 6 – May 31 sabbatical period. Our Associate Rector, the Reverend Jacob E. Pierce, and Assisting Priest, the Reverend Keith C. Lane will welcome a host of visiting clergy during this season. Parish Community Monthly Potlucks: Great First Success! On Sunday, February 12, more than 75 adults, youth, and children gathered at small tables for our first 2017 monthly Parish Potluck at 12:15 p.m. in the Community Room and Parish Hall (second floor, Parish House). Created to foster better community on the most convenient day for our urban parish church, all are invited to share in these “no pressure” meals. Each month, on the second Sunday of the month, a different parish ministry group or team will sponsor and organize the event. The next gathering will be Sunday, March 12 for which we are seeking a host. This is a great opportunity for your group or ministry team to share its story with the wider parish, and smaller groups can pair up. Hosts are responsible for setup/cleanup, and providing basic potluck entrees. “Papa Pietro’s” Dinner & Auction. Saturday, March 18 6:00–9:00 p.m. Tickets are $16 for adults, $12 for youth 12-17, $8 for children 6-11. Under 6 years old are free. You can sign up online on the St. Peter’s website or pay by check (with spaghetti dinner in the memo line). You will enjoy spaghetti with Jim DiMartino’s meat sauce or a meatless sauce for vegetarians, Italian salad, fresh rolls and choice of brownie with salted caramel and ice cream or strawberry-topped cheesecake. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase. The Pilgrim Class will be our wait staff and dinner will be accompanied by youth musicians. The auction is not to be missed with art, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates, a stained glass window by parishioner Dan Woodall, gift baskets, and much more! This class of 10th and 11th graders have been working toward this Holy Pilgrimage for 5 years, learning about the Church, faith, and following in the footsteps of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Francis, and others. George Winston Concert Benefits Galilee Ministries. On Thursday, March 23 at 8:00 p.m., pianist George Winston will play a benefit concert at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson. Since 1972, Winston has released 13 solo piano albums. His third concert at St. Alban’s benefits both the St. Alban’s Preschool Scholarship Fund and Galilee Ministries of East Charlotte. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $100 for VIP, which includes priority seating and an intermission reception with beer, wine, and appetizers. You may purchase tickets in the lobby. Women’s Eastertide Retreat with St. Martin’s Charlotte, April 21–23. Parish Administration during The Rector’s Sabbatical. During the Rector’s Sabbatical, March 6–May 31, the Reverend Jacob E. Pierce, Associate Rector, will work closely with Senior Warden, Bert Miano; Junior Warden, Maria Long; Assisting Priest, the Reverend Keith C. Lane; the Staff; and the Vestry on the overall administration of the parish.
Chronic Care Support Group. The next gathering of this group, which meets on the first Friday of each month, will be Friday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Parlor. Assisting Priest, the Reverend Keith Lane, and others facilitate this monthly meeting of those with chronic illness and caregivers alike. Welcoming Antonio Cook, Facilities Assistant. Antonio Cook has joined St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in the role of Facilities Assistant, as of February 20, 2017. He comes to us with a valued background in coordinating events, detail oriented cleaning experience, and overall quality customer service. As a part of the Facilities team, Antonio will be responsible for the daily upkeep of the building and grounds, event coordination, as well as assisting with a variety of facilities related projects. An Invitation from the Parish St. Mary’s Guild. How do you tell the history of St. Peter’s? One of the ways is through the story of the St. Mary’s guild. We are a group of women who, along with many of our parents and children, have been active members of this parish for many years. We are no longer affiliated with the Episcopal Church Women, but most of us have a long guild history. We meet the first Monday morning of each month (except July and August) in a member’s home for fellowship, Bible study, and service projects for the parish and community. Some past service projects included: altar linens, kneeler cushions for the chapel, and renovation of the sacristy, as well as support for summer programs for at risk children, the Augustine project and many other works that support the parish. We have stories and history to tell and we would love to have you join our journey. Immigration Awareness Tables at St. Peter’s. This Sunday members of the parish Social Justice Team will be present at an information table in the Parish House to provide faith-based insight to immigration matters. Resources from the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. will be available.
A Lenten Letter from Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple. Our Bishop Pro Tempore has penned a letter for the St. Peter’s parish community and everyone in the Diocese of North Carolina. It is available online and copies are available in the Parish House lobby. Important pieces of the letter direct readers to pages called “Take Action for Refugees”and “Equipping the Saints.” The Clergy and Social Justice Team encourage familiarization with these resources for our mission and ministry.
Weekday Volunteer Receptionists Needed. Parish Administrator Leigh Dixon is recruiting additional volunteers to serve as daytime Parish House receptionist on a weekly basis. Duties include welcoming guests, answering phone calls, accepting package deliveries, and occasional administrative tasks. In addition to regular weekly shifts, volunteers may serve as substitutes on occasions when a receptionist may need to be away. 2017 Annual Fund Update. Getting Closer: As of Monday, February 27, 333 pledges totaling $890,800 have been received toward our $975,000 goal. The Annual Fund Leadership and Vestry are grateful for each pledge received and prayerfully seek a 100% investment in life at St. Peter’s from all members and newcomers. The Vestry adopted a 2017 budget at its January meeting based on pledges received and limited secondary income sources and hopes for more pledges in order to hire a part-time Communications Administrator and address certain ministry/program and property needs.
