Life at St. Peter’s Fall 2017 coming soon. Our parish magazine and calendar of formation, worship, programs, and events is being finalized for release in early August and in preparation for August 20, St. Peter’s Parish Celebration: Rally Day, Ministry Fair, and Festive Eucharist for the Confession of St. Peter. Watch closely for this comprehensive resource for members, non-members, and visitors to engage life at St. Peter’s.
Consider Sunday Evenings at St. Peter’s. In addition to 8:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., at 5:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month, a meditative service of Holy Eucharist is offered, patterned after the Taizé, France community. This year-round liturgical offering includes music for piano, time for contemplative silence, and candle-lighting as a prayer form. Mark your calendars for August 20, and if you have never attended, please consider this powerful option for worship. Our second and fourth Sunday offering of Choral Evensong resumes on September 24.
Summer Weekday Morning Prayer and Tuesday Noon Eucharist. Monday–Friday, 8:00–8:30 a.m. Morning Prayer in the Chapel is a quiet and beautiful offering for the start of the day. On Tuesdays at Noon, we offer a 30-minute celebration of the Holy Eucharist without music in the Chapel. All are invited to these weekday offerings, especially when unable to attend our Sunday morning or evening offerings.
Registration Open for “Becoming Episcopalian” Inquirers/Confirmation Class, August 20 – October 8. In preparation for the official Visitation of our Bishop Diocesan, the Right Reverend Samuel Sewall Rodman III, on Sunday, October 15, an 8-week “Becoming Episcopalian” class will be led by a team of clergy and lay leaders. Classes will be offered weekly on Sundays, August 20 through October 8, 9:30–10:30 a.m. All adult non-members and members who wish to learn more about, have a refresher, or reaffirm their faith as Episcopalians; who are not confirmed Episcopalians; or who wish to be received into the Episcopal Church from another Christian tradition are eligible to attend this class series. Bishop Rodman will administer confirmations, receptions, and reaffirmations. Register online by Thursday, August 17. Liturgical Ministries Retreat and Training Day, August 19. Liturgical ministers and volunteers will gather on Saturday, August 19, 9:00–11:00 a.m. for a retreat and training day. This retreat is for long-time volunteers, those who are new to a ministry, those who wish to be trained, or those who simply want to learn more. Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers and Sub-deacons, Lectors, Altar Guild Volunteers, Eucharistic Visitors, Welcome Hosts, and Healing Ministers are encouraged to attend. The day will begin with fellowship and coffee at 8:45 a.m. in the Community Room, followed by a plenary, and breakout training for each group.
St. Peter’s Parish Celebration: Rally Day, Ministry Fair, and Festive Eucharist for the Confession of St. Peter, August 20. Mark your calendars for what will be an extraordinary day in the life of St. Peter’s, leading us well in the remainder of the calendar year. We have transferred the January 18 feast of the Confession of St. Peter the Apostle to Sunday, August 20 to rally all ages of the parish community about ministry areas and how to get involved; register for children, youth, and adult formation classes which begin August 27; and experience richer worship experiences at 8:00 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. Watch for much more information and spread the word about St. Peter’s Day 2017.

Our annual retreat to Kanuga Conference & Retreat Center in the mountains of Western North Carolina, will take place from dinnertime on Friday, September 15 through lunchtime on Sunday, September 17. “Unopened Gifts” is this year’s theme. During a balanced weekend of fun, fellowship, rejuvenation, and recreation for infants to our oldest parishioners, those on retreat will have occasions to share and explore the things that bring joy in our lives. What gifts has God given that make our days and weeks brighter? How might God be calling us to use our gifts to serve others? Talent Show at Kanuga: In keeping with the “Unopened Gifts” theme and back by popular demand, the Saturday, September 16 evening activity will be a Talent Show! Don’t miss this fun evening of fellow parishioners sharing their variety of talents on stage. All performances should last no longer than five minutes and you will need to provide all props and music.
Scholarships Available for Kaunga. St. Peter’s Vestry, Clergy, and Kanuga Planning Team are committed to making the September 15–17 getaway to Kanuga feasible for all members of the St. Peter’s parish community. Scholarships are available for individuals and households who may need assistance in order to attend this community-building weekend. For more information, contact Fr. Kanuga Committee Needs Your Wrapping Supplies. The Kanuga Planning Team needs leftover wrapping supplies for an activity during the weekend: wrapping paper, tissue paper, ribbon, gift tags, etc. No scraps are too small or too big. No paper is too nice or too tacky. Any occasion, any season. You can drop supplies off at the parish house on Sundays or during regular hours.
What to Expect at Kanuga? The Kanuga Planning Team is working hard to make this year’s retreat filled with old traditions and new adventures. Our schedule will be much like it has been in the past with social time Friday night, program on Saturday morning, free time Saturday afternoon, Talent Show Saturday evening, and worship on Sunday. Some new things planned include a bonfire with s’mores; free-time actives on-site; and a progressive social through some of the cabins. If you haven’t been to Kanuga, this is a great year to try it out. If you’ve been before, this is a year you will not want to miss!

Parish Community Monthly Potluck: Sunday, August 13. Please mark your calendar to attend our next monthly time to share food and fellowship. If your name begins with the letter A-M, please bring something savory; if it begins with the letter N-Z, please bring something sweet. The hosts will provide the main dish. What is the Parish Community Potluck, you ask? Initiated in January by the Clergy and Vestry as one way to increase community among newcomers and members throughout the parish, all ages are invited to these monthly no-pressure meals. Each month, on the second Sunday of the month after the 10:45 a.m. service in the Community Room, a different parish ministry group or team serves as event host. Hosts are responsible for simple setup, providing basic potluck entrees, and clean up; these are a great chance for your group or ministry team to share its story with the wider parish. Holy Chow Breakfast Resumes August 27. On this day, our weekly “Holy Chow” breakfast begins another program year as another way to deepen connections at St. Peter’s by sharing a morning meal. Senior Class Third Tuesday Luncheon. The August luncheon will be at Shun Lee Palace across from Cotswold Village Shopping Center on Colwick Road at 11:30 a.m. on August 15. The St. Peter’s Senior Class is a group of members and friends of St. Peter’s (55+) who meet monthly for an informal lunch and twice a year for a party. Young Adults Fellowship Brainstorming Lunch, August 20. All young adults are invited to join Young Adults Coordinator, Mary Gotschall and the Reverend Ollie V. Rencher, Rector, for lunch and brainstorming about current and future offerings of this ministry on Sunday, August 20 after the 10:45 a.m. liturgy in the Parish House Community Room. This will be a time to reflect on the past and share ideas about how all sorts of young adults might build community through social, formation, and service opportunities. Carolyn Carlburg elected to fill Unexpired Vestry Term. At the July meeting of the Vestry, Carolyn Carlburg was elected to fill the 2016-2018 unexpired term of Michael Koppenal. On August 1, the Koppenal family will relocate to Florida for a work-related opportunity. The Rector, Wardens, and Vestry are grateful for Michael’s service on the Vestry and Carolyn’s willingness to serve beginning with her first Vestry meeting on August 15.
Community of Hope Information Dinner, August 16. Community of Hope (CoH) is a servant ministry initiative that offers spiritual development and training, drawn from Benedictine principles, for adults who want to be part of an intentional community, which meets monthly, to support each person’s respective pastoral care ministries offered either within or beyond the parish. St. Peter’s CoH Chapter Coordinator, Michael Spivey and fellow chapter ministers invite interested persons to learn more about CoH during a dinner on Wednesday, August 16, 6:00 p.m. at the home of Phyllis Ferguson (3131 Fairfax Drive Charlotte 28209). Charlotte Pride Parade is Sunday, August 27. Join fellow parishioners, young and old, in supporting your LGBT friends and neighbors in the parade on North Tryon Street that begins soon after the completion of our 10:45 a.m. service. Volunteers are needed to march, purchase water for participants, provide hospitality at the churchyard and at front sidewalk, and monitor marchers. Offer Altar Flowers and Eucharistic Supplies: In Honor or Memory of People and Occasions. Life at St. Peter’s includes the opportunity for parishioners to honor or memorialize loved ones or celebrate special occasions in meaningful ways by giving Altar flowers and Eucharistic supplies. Altar flowers (2 large arrangements) are $150 per Sunday; more than one person or household can share in giving. Eucharistic supplies (bread, wine) are $30 for one month or $15 for two Sundays. Summer Parish House and Office Hours. Through August 21, the Parish House is closed on Mondays to allow the Clergy and Staff the benefit of working remotely via e-mail and phone. St. Peter’s Community Garden: Summer Volunteers Needed. The St. Peter’s Community Garden, which grows food for Friendship Trays (Charlotte’s “Meals on Wheels” program), is undergoing a change in leadership. Major volunteer support is needed as the garden goes through this transition. Summer gardening teams require enough people to tend the garden two days a week with at least two people working each day. Prayer Shawl Knitting Group Location Change and Request for Yarn. This fellowship and pastoral care ministry circle will now meet every first and third Tuesday at St. Peter’s in the Parlor from 10:00–11:30 a.m. If you have yarn that you don’t need, consider donating it to this ministry. The Clergy, Pastoral Care Team, and Guild of the Christ Child share prayer shawls with parish adults, youth, and children on various occasions. Ben Outen Music Fund established at St. Peter’s. In thanksgiving for the 25-year ministry of Ben Outen as Director of Music and Organist at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Ben Outen Music Fund has been established by the Rector. This new restricted parish fund exists to enrich the worship life of St. Peter’s through the enhancement of music made possible by gifts offered above and beyond pledges to the annual operating budget and from friends, family, and other supporters throughout the year. Gifts may be given in honor or memory of loved ones, for seasonal or special occasions, or on an ongoing basis. To make your gift in appreciation for Ben’s ministry and on the occasion of his July 9 leave-taking from St. Peter’s, you may give online or make checks payable to “St. Peter’s Ben Outen Music Fund” and direct them to Parish Administrator, Leigh Dixon.
“Realm” Online Community Resource coming to St. Peter’s. Our parish is moving to a new church record keeping solution called Realm. While it primarily will serve the administrative needs of the Staff and Clergy, it will offer some exciting opportunities to support the ways you are involved in the parish. Not only will this improve work life for those who work at the Parish House, it will make it easier for our parish community to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and facilitate member engagement. Stay tuned for dates and details about its launch.
