Lent at St. Peter’s. During the Season of Lent there are many opportunities for further formation, worship, and study. On Sundays in Lent, the Parish Hall Forum will focus on a study of Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan’s The Last Week, about the final days before the crucifixion in the Gospel of Mark. After the 10:45 a.m. service on Sundays in Lent, the clergy will lead a 30-minute discussion on “Lenten Spiritual Practices” in the Parlor beginning at 12:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday, beginning March 11, Evening Prayer will be offered in the Chapel at 5:30 p.m. Whether you participate in one or all of these offerings, our hope is that Lent at St. Peter’s will enhance your journey of discipleship as we prepare for the holiest of seasons in the Church.

Youth Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction Fundraiser, March 16, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Register now for Saint Pierre’s Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction, hosted by the Pilgrim Class (10th and 11th graders), their families, and the Youth Advisory Team, Saturday, March 16. This “Night in France” showcases the pilgrims’ chosen destination–where spaghetti is as beloved as it is in Italy! We will have a half-and-half cash raffle, guessing game jars of candy, a silent auction, the spaghetti dinner served by our youth, and more. Pricing: $14 for adults; $8 for youth 12–17; $4 for children 6–11; children under 6 are free; family maximum is $40; wine and beer will also be available for an additional charge. Worship and Music

Observing Weekly Worship at St. Peter’s. Every weekday and Sundays, St. Peter’s offers opportunities for worship, study, and reflection. See a daily schedule online to learn more.

Daily Evening Prayer. Beginning Monday, March 11, Evening Prayer will be offered in the Chapel at 5:30 p.m., Monday–Thursday. This 30-minute liturgy is a wonderful way to mark the end of your day, whether you travel to St. Peter’s for this offering, or simply stop by on your way home. Daily Morning Prayer is offered in the Chapel, Monday–Friday at 8:00 a.m.

Charlotte area Choral Evensong on Sunday at St. Peter’s. Charlotte Convocation choirmasters have organized a weekly Choral Evensong series among area churches. On Sunday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m., Evensong is offered at St. Peter’s by the Tour Choirs of The Choir School at St. Peter’s. Sunday, March 17 the Choirs of Holy Comforter, St. John’s, and St. Martin’s sing Evensong at 5:00 p.m. (Holy Comforter). Learn more online.

Visual Changes in Our Sacred Space during Lent. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, the covering of crosses and the altar mosaic is an ancient tradition observed during the season of Lent. Instruments of the Passion depicted in the dossal veil, which now covers the mosaic at the altar, are a rooster (crowed after Peter’s third denial of Jesus) and what is a combination of a lance (used to pierce the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross) and a sponge on the end of a forked rod (offering sour wine to Jesus as he hung on the cross). On either side of Jesus are St. Mary the Virgin, Mother of our Lord, and St. John the Beloved, depicted with his head uncovered and beardless. At the foot of the cross is the image of Jesus as the Lamb of God.


Lenten Forum Series, Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Beginning Sunday, March 10, the clergy will offer a study and conversation around John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg’s famous book The Last Week, which explores the final days before Jesus’ crucifixion in the Gospel of Mark. Available for purchase at this link, acquiring a copy is not necessary, though reading along may enhance your experience. Several copies are also available for purchase through the parish office.

Lenten Spiritual Practices, Sundays at 12:30 p.m. Beginning March 10, the clergy will offer a 30-minute conversation in the parlor each Sunday in Lent as an opportunity to enhance personal spiritual practices in this holy season. Join us after Coffee Hour for conversations about praying with beads, praying the Daily Office, praying the Examine, Lectio Divina, and Centering Prayer.

Parents Connect Sunday Gatherings. On Sunday mornings during the 9:30 a.m. formation hour, parents are invited to gather for fellowship in the Parents Connect Room. On first Sundays of the month, parents will gather for formation and discussion on key topics: April 7, God and Current Events: How to Help Your Children Understand Faith in Our Society, led by Mother Amanda. May 5, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: How it Prepares Our Children for a Lifetime of Faith, led by Anna Hurdle and Katie Nelson. Book Study with the Reverend Dr. Paul Hanneman, March 26. In “Putting on the Mind of Christ,” Jim Marion maps the nine stages of consciousness through which the Christian grows toward full spiritual maturity. Paul Hanneman invites you to join him in reading this powerful book in a deliberate, contemplative manner on second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. through March 26 at St. Peter’s. Rohr Conference Live Webcast, “The Universal Christ,” March 28–31. Franciscan Richard Rohr will be joined by historian John Dominic Crossan and public theologian Jacqui Lewis in Albuquerque, New Mexico online via live webcast. The conference begins on Thursday, March 28 and ends on Sunday, March 31; a detailed schedule is forthcoming. Community Life

St. Peter’s Winter/Spring 2019. Stay tuned to parish announcements in the Sunday leaflet and weekly eNews for the upcoming St. Peter’s Spring 2019 magazine to be released soon. This seasonal magazine will include parish fellowship events, formation opportunities, and Holy Week and Easter information.

Holy Chow Breakfast. On Sundays, 8:30–9:25 a.m., enjoy fellowship at Holy Chow, a hearty breakfast in the Community Room on the second floor of the Parish House, before Christian Formation classes begin at 9:30 a.m. Join all ages of parishioners for one of the best breakfasts in Charlotte. The cost is $4 per person or a maximum of $15 per household. Don’t have cash? You can now pay online through Realm.

Wearing Nametag Buttons on Sundays. As we welcome new staff and clergy, please help them begin putting faces with names by wearing your nametag buttons on Sunday mornings. The button boards are located near the 7th street Parish House entrance and in the Narthex, so please be sure to pick yours up as you head into the church for services. If you don’t yet have a nametag button, sign-up is available in the lobby at the Reception Desk.

Planned Giving at St. Peter’s. The St. Peter’s community of faith is supported in part by the vision and generosity of generations of parishioners who came before us. Like them, we can also help to ensure that the programs and facilities we love will continue to exist far into the future. Pub Theology, March 14. Typically offered on second Thursdays, 5:30–7:00 p.m., the next Pub Theology will take place on Thursday, March 14. Father Jacob will lead a discussion on Holy Week and Easter. You are invited to join a member of St. Peter’s clergy for a discussion at Sir Edmond Halley’s Restaurant and Freehouse (Park Road Shopping Center). Pub snacks and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at these casual holy conversation events.

St. Luke’s Guild, April 5. The next gathering of this first-Friday group is April 5, 11:00 a.m. The clergy and parishioner Dan Busch, LCSW (retired), facilitate this fellowship for persons with chronic illnesses of any sort and those who are caregivers of family and friends. 29th Annual Women’s Retreat, March 22–24. The Women’s Retreat is held in the spring at the Valle Crucis Conference Center deep in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Valle Crucis, NC. Social Justice Film Night, March 26. St. Peter’s Social Justice Ministry is partnering with Novant Health for a special screening of the documentary “Gen Silent” on March 26 at 6:00–8:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. During this free event you can learn how LGBT seniors who fought the earliest battles for equality now face fear of discrimination in healthcare/long term care. Volunteer Front Desk Receptionists. During St. Peter’s weekday business hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the St. Peter’s Reception Desk is staffed entirely by volunteers who actively receive visitors, give directions, and direct calls. Recently, we have had a need for additional volunteers and many have stepped in to help. We are still in need of morning shift volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. The church business office does not run as smoothly without a front desk attendant, so please consider this important ministry opportunity. Civil Rights Museum Day Trip, March 30. The St. Peter’s Social Justice Ministry Team received a mini-grant from The Foundation for the Carolinas for its work in successfully hosting “On the Table” conversations last fall. This grant provides significant funding for a group trip to the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro on Saturday, March 30. The fee for each participant is $10, which includes a Holy Chow breakfast in the Parish Hall, round-trip motor coach transportation, museum admission, and lunch. Before returning to Charlotte, the group will also visit February One, the monument sculpture on the campus of North Carolina A&T. This will be the last opportunity to sign up; 4 seats are still available and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis by signing up in the Gallery after church service on March 10. Experience England with the MasterSingers. Only 5 spots remain for adults interested in traveling to Durham, England when the MasterSingers of The Choir School serve as choir-in-residence during the summer of 2019. The trip departure date is July 18 with a return on July 29, and includes 10 nights in York and Durham, accommodations in a bed and breakfast, daily excursions, 3 evening meals, and the opportunity to experience the centuries-old tradition of daily Anglican worship in Durham Cathedral. Outreach and Social Justice

Room in the Inn on Wednesday nights. On each Wednesday evening through March 27, St. Peter’s will participate in Room in the Inn (RITI) by providing a warm, welcoming place where twelve neighbors can share a meal and sleep in our Parish Hall. Room in the Inn Supplies Needed. On each Wednesday evening, December through March, St. Peter’s participates in the Urban Ministry Center’s Room in the Inn (RITI) program. We need help with stocking our dwindling supply closet, especially lotion, small bars of soap, hand towels, travel size toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant (men and women)‎. We would also accept other donations, such hand-warmers and bus passes. We cannot use haircare products. Please leave your donations in the RITI basket in the Parish House lobby.
