It is in Giving that we Receive: Using your Time and Talent to Support St. Peter’s Outreach

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” (1Peter 4:10)

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has a long history of service in the Charlotte community and beyond. Many of you who may be new to our community may not know just how far our arms reach: from The Soup Kitchen at Urban Ministry, to Thompson Child and Family Focus, to Samaritan House or to the Charlotte chapter of Augustine Literacy Project and The Choir School at St. Peter’s. We even had our hand in the beginnings of what is now Atrium Health. Reaching out in service to others in our community is consistent with our Christian mission and vision, and one of the best ways that we can show our commitment to God’s love is to use the time and talent gifts we have been given to serve others.

In support of the Stewardship Committee’s Time and Talent Campaign, the Outreach Ministry is asking you to discern prayerfully ways that you can give some of your time and talent to the many organizations that we serve who need your help. A revised “Servant Ministry” brochure will be published soon and available around the parish house. A goal of the Outreach team is to increase the number of us who serve in each of our ministries. One possibility that is coming up soon is an information session for becoming an Augustine Literacy tutor. Did you know that if a child is not reading at grade level by the age of 8, they will probably never catch up and high school graduation is unlikely?

Augustine Literacy Project works to reverse that pattern by improving the reading, spelling, and writing skills of low-income young children in our community. If you are interested in learning more about becoming an Augustine tutor, consider attending an Info Session at the Park Road Caribou on Thursday, July 18 and hearing how just a couple of hours of your time per week can help change the life of a child.

The need in our community is great and your time is precious. I would love to talk with any of you who are looking for a way to use your many talents to change the lives of those less fortunate in our city. You can contact me at It will change your life, too!

Faithfully yours,
Elsie Erneston, Vestry Member for Outreach
