In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice, early in the morning I make my appeal and watch for you. – Psalm 5:3
I started regularly attending Morning Prayer at St. Peter’s when my daughter was hospitalized for an extended period. I found the discipline of organizing my day to get to church by 8:00 a.m. helped to keep me from dwelling on my anxiety and descending into despair. After she came home, my attendance dropped off for awhile, but I picked it up again as a Lenten discipline. I have been a regular ever since.
The Daily Office – in particular Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer – are gifts in the Book of Common Prayer. We pray the Psalms, we read from the Hebrew Scripture and the New Testament, and we offer prayers of thanksgiving and intercession. We pray for our parish family, our leaders, the world, and each other.
The Daily Office gives us a way to acknowledge our reliance on God as we start our day and as we end our day. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said in Life Together: “After the day’s work has been completed we ask for God’s blessing, peace and preservation for the whole of Christianity, for our congregation, for pastors in their ministries, for the poor, the wretched and lonely, for the sick and dying, for our neighbor, for our family at home, and for our community.”
This is an anxious time for our city, our country, and the world. It is our human responsibility to remain physically separated from each other. The Daily Office helps to structure the day, when it would be so easy to give up, and spend these days of isolation binge-watching television. Take a break from the news. It can only increase your level of anxiety.
Technology makes it possible to connect with each other for Morning and Evening Prayer. It can be a ray of light that helps to penetrate the darkness of our current situation. It brings me joy to see familiar faces from St Peter’s joining in the Virtual Daily Office.
I hope you will join us,
Paula Savich, St. Peter’s Daily Office Coordinator
