Dear People of St. Peter’s,
I am writing to provide several updates on our ministry together. Thank you for your participation in the worship survey written by Vestry liaison for Worship and Music, Chase Branham. Our Taskforce for Reopening received high participation and valuable information in determining next steps for reopening the parish.
Phase Two of the Diocesan plan for reopening was to begin July 1. Phase Two entails a gradual reopening of our building for small in-person gatherings of no more than 25. Phase Two also requires new precautions and procedures, such as screening for symptoms, sign-in sheets for tracing, deep cleanings of all our spaces, and the wearing of masks. It is now clear that we will not enter Phase Two on July 1. Cases continue to rise sharply in North Carolina and Mecklenburg County. We will remain in Phase One (our current phase) for the time being. You can stay informed and read the Diocesan guidelines by visiting our website www.st-peters.org/covid-19-updates.
Though we are not prepared to enter Phase Two, we are taking some new steps towards reopening. Beginning July 1, the Parish House will reopen to clergy, staff, and tenants only. Members of the staff will have the option to telecommute depending on their personal comfort level, but staff offices will reopen should they choose to work from the Parish House. Members of the staff will maintain distance from one another, face coverings will be required while interacting, all meetings will remain virtual, and public spaces will be regularly cleaned.
We are not able to reopen the Church and Parish House to the public at this time, but the St. Peter’s Memorial Garden will reopen on July 1 for private prayer Monday–Thursday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and Fridays, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Earlier this year, I announced that Kristie Lauderbaugh has been hired to serve as Program Coordinator for The Choir School at St. Peter’s and would be leaving her role at the parish. Kristie has been splitting her time with the parish and The Choir School since late April. I am grateful to The Choir School staff and board for their flexibility in allowing us to retain Kristie on a part-time basis during our closure. On July 15, Kristie will end her time with St. Peter’s and move to her new position full-time.
In the meantime, I have hired a part-time Clergy Assistant to assist with pastoral care administration, membership and newcomer process, and other administrative matters. I am excited to announce that Michael Talbert has agreed to join the staff in this new role on an interim basis. I have also created a new part-time position to manage our internal and external communications, including weekly eNews, website content, and signage. I am excited to announce that Davis Tapp has agreed to serve in this new role as Communications Associate. Both Davis and Michael will begin on July 1.
I am grateful for your continued financial support of the ministry and mission of St. Peter’s. Though we are unable to physically gather, I have been inspired by the myriad of ways we have continued to be a beacon of God’s love in the heart of Charlotte.
“See” you on Sunday!
The Reverend Jacob E. Pierce, Rector
